Kalamata Red is the name given to this often red variety described as a Greek heirloom strain, i.e. original landrace plants that have been bred with greater selection taking place than would be the case with landrace strains in their natural habitat.  Originally cultivated by a farming family for more than 30 years at a latitude of 37° north, legal pressures forced the cessation of cultivation and eventual abandonement of the village in question, Messiana, kalamata. Kalamata Red was the name given to this 'undeground' variety in the 1970s and 1980s.  Some plants display a red colouration, especially in colder weather, while others remain a light green. The exact orgins of this line are unknown although it seems likely that the origins could be in the Balkans or eastern Mediterranean with further influence possibly from tropical landraces introduced to Greece in the 1970s.  This latest iteration of Kalamata Red was bred using a so-called 2019 'alpha-male' pollinating several mothers. The latest selection was based on shorter plants with a faster flowering time and classic hash-plant characteristics. These plants display a high resistance to plant pests, moulds and heat. Harvest time outdoors in northern latitudes is in late October. Terps. are hashy, herbal, and citrus and the effect is very cerebral, uplifting, stimulating, euphoric, creative and psychedelic.
