  • Amanita the fly killer (Amanita muscaria), commonly known as crazy mushroom, mushroom or fly agaric, is a basidiomycete of the genus Amanitis. It is also a muscimol mushroom

Arguably the most iconic mushroom species, the fly agaric is a large, white-gilled, white-spotted, usually red mushroom, and is one of the most recognizable and common mushrooms in popular culture.

All varieties of Amanita muscaria, but specifically var. muscaria, are known for their hallucinogenic properties, with the main psychoactive components being the neurotoxins ibotic acid and muscimol. A local variety of the mushroom was used as an intoxicant and entheogen by the indigenous peoples of Siberia and by the Sami, and has religious significance in these cultures

Amanita muscaria is a cosmopolitan mushroom, native to coniferous and deciduous forests throughout the temperate and northern regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including higher elevations in warmer latitudes, in areas such as the Hindu Kush, the Mediterranean, and Central America.

Amanita muscaria contains several biologically active agents, at least one of which, muscimol, is known to be psychoactive. Ipotenic acid, a neurotoxin, serves as a prodrug of muscimol, with approximately 10-20% being converted to muscimol after ingestion. An effective dose in adults is about 6 mg of muscimol or 30 to 60 mg of ibotenic acid, this is usually the amount found in one cap of Amanita muscaria. The amount and ratio of chemical compounds per mushroom varies widely from region to region and season, which can further confuse the issue.

The wide range of psychoactive effects have been variously described as depressant, sedative-hypnotic, psychedelic, dissociative, or hallucinogenic. However, paradoxical effects such as stimulation may occur. Perceptual phenomena such as synaesthesia, macropsia and micropsia may occur. The latter two effects may occur simultaneously or alternatively as part of the Alice in Wonderland syndrome, collectively known as dysmetropia, along with related distortions of nearsightedness and farsightedness. Some users report lucid dreaming under the influence of its hypnotic effects.
